The standing seam metal roof ‘phenomenon’, as it were, has been part of a larger shift in the types of building materials used in modern construction. It should be noted that standing seam roofs are very different in terms of their installation as compared with more traditional approaches. The latter tend to have an average lifespan of 15-20 years. Installing the metal roof properly starts with assessing the fate of the current roof. Metal roofing panels can be installed over existing shingle roofs. This saves money because removal of the previous roof adds expense to a project. But if there are issues with the old roof and/or decking, the new metal roof install will not be optimal.
The highest priority matter to address when installing a standing seam metal roof is water protection. The installation of a moisture barrier, such as quality underlayment, and use of dependable sealant are critical to the successful installation, and longevity, of the roof. A key attraction to standing seams is nearly unmatched protection from weather, which includes major impact resistance. Standing seam metal roofs require the installation of clips where panels will be secured. Because of standing seam design, these clips are hidden for aesthetic purposes.
